SELF
is a very flexible program that can help eligible teens obtain items they
need to live independently, such as:
Bicycles
Driver's education
classes
State identification
cards and birth certificates
College or tech
school application fees
Books for college
Clothes for job
interviews and work
Fees for summer
camp or after-school activities
Help with independent
living (see Skills Group topics below
Other items may also be covered (sorry, SELF will not help you buy a car!). Ryan Horton is the SELF Program Worker and you can call Ryan Horton or Hannah Wilson at 751-8223,
Monday through Friday if you have questions or ideas about other items that
SELF might pay for.
Eligibility:
You are eligible to receive SELF program funds to help with the needs
listed above if:
You
are between the ages of 14 and 21
You have spent at least
one night since your 14th birthday in a county-approved, out of home placement
(such as a foster home, the Evergreen Shelter, Northwest Minnesota Juvenile
Center, or another facility). Call Ryan Horton or Hannah Wilson at 751-8223 if you
have questions about what kind of placements qualify.
Skills
Groups: SELF sponsors skills groups on topics teens identify as
important to helping them live independently. Groups meet one evening
a week for 12 weeks. Topics include:
Housing
information
Bugeting
Interviewing and
employment skills
Communication skills
Sexuality
Legal issues for
youth
Issues with drugs
and alcohol
Educational and
career opportunities and
more...
