First City on the Mississippi  Bike Ride

A fundraiser for Bemidji Rock Sober, a program of Evergreen Youth & Family Services. Rock Sober is a support group for teens struggling to staying drug- and alcohol-free. The group meets on Mondays and Tuesdays for support and education. Extensive support is given in all aspects of a youth’s life. Discussion topics include: relationships, honesty, developing a circle of support, future goals, the addict inside, mental and physical health, giving back to the community, and more. The group meets for an activity that occupies their Friday nights. Group members also participate in opportunities to volunteer throughout the community.

Lake Bemidji Loop (17 miles) follows bike trails and roads to the half way mark in Lake Bemidji State Park(rest stop mile 9). Leave the rest stop and travel through the state part until you get to Paul Bunyan State trail and back to the start following scenic Lake Bemidji. A 16.7 mile loop for the whole family young and old. The youth under age 12 can try to spot all the’ Babe the Blue Ox’ and win a prize. Cost Adults and Teens $10.00 and Youth 12 and younger have no entry fee for this loop, Tee Shirt Not included.  For a tee shirt add $8.00 to entry fee for this loop.

The 26 Miler will follow the Paul Bunyan Trial 13 miles south to the Guthrie food stop and then retrace your tracks back to the Sanford Center. Do not start this route before 8:30 am or the food stop may not be open when you arrive. Cost Adults and Teens $10.00 and Youth 12 and younger have no entry fee for this route, Tee Shirt Not included. For a tee shirt add $8.00 to entry fee for this route.

Customize your own length if 17 or 26 miles are not far enough for you. Start with the 46 mile core loop and add different ‘Legs’ to create the distance that is right for you. Possible route lengths include: 46, 54, 63, 68, 71, 75, 84, 92. The number of food stops along your route will depend on the route you travel. The 46 mile core loop will have 3 food stops on it. All routes will go through all the food stops on the 46 mile core route. Cost $28.00 before April 1, 2012 includes tee shirt.

46 mile core loop follows Power Dam Road through the country to Roosevelt Road then to Cass Lake(rest stop mile 20) where you pick up the Heartland Trail. Riders will cross the Mississippi River several times. Pass through Food stop mile 26 then cut across on a rolling county road 16 to Guthrie(food stop mile 34) where you pick up the Paul Bunyan Trail back to Bemidji. There will be three food stops on the route.

Pike Bay Leg adds 8 miles to the 46 core loop. After the Cass Lake food stop (mile 20) head out on the Soo line trail to the east side of Pike Bay. Follow the Migizi trail around Pike Bay through tall pines and glimpses of the bay. Reconnect up with the Heartland trail. Food Stop at mile 33 and where you connect to the Paul Bunyan Trail in Guthrie at mile 41. Total of route 54 miles.

Walker Leg adds 21 miles to the 46 core loop. Leave Cass Lake on the Heartland trail, pass through food stop mile 26 and continue on towards the intersection of the Paul Bunyan trail, food stop at mile 39. Take the Paul Bunyan trail back to reconnect with the 46 mile loop at the food stop in Guthrie at mile 55. Total of route 68 miles.

Combine the Pike Bay Leg and Walker leg  for a total route of 75 miles, add Lake Bemidji Loop for a total route  of 92 miles.
